Our purpose is to facilitate learning and to teach students. The students are responsible for mastering basic skills, practicing rational thinking skills, demonstrating self confidence, integrity and a positive attitude to becoming productive members of a democratic society within a world of diverse cultures. This schooling will be done by providing a safe and healthy environment, conducive to promoting maximum learning by the student, with a challenging and well balanced curriculum, taught by a caring and professional staff committed to excellence.
The Escanaba High School has approximately 750 students in grades 9 through 12. We are considered a class “B” high school for athletic competition by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). We have one of the most well rounded educational programs in the Upper Peninsula with a strong focus on academics, athletics, fine arts, and student activities. All of our teachers are highly qualified under the criteria established by "No Child Left Behind".
We offer all of the core classes in the Michigan Merit Curriculum along with dozens of electives including advanced placement courses in biology, chemistry, statistics, calculus, and English. We are the only local high school offering advanced placement classes. EHS students also take advantage of dual enrollment opportunities at Bay College (and Northern Michigan University), earning a significant amount of college credits each school year. Our scholarship program has grown dramatically in the past decade resulting in approximately $375,000 in local scholarships being awarded to each graduating class. The top student received over $20,000 while the top twenty students all received at least $5,000 each.
Our sports program includes several offerings during the three high school sports seasons. We offer football, cross-country, sideline cheerleading, girls tennis, and girls volleyball in the fall. Our winter season is the busiest with boys and girls basketball, wrestling, hockey, competitive cheerleading, bowling and gymnastics. The spring schedule includes track, baseball, softball, boys tennis and golf for boys and girls.
The fine arts department is outstanding. We offer band, orchestra, chorus and chorale. Many of our students have been invited to perform at all-state competitions with several of them earning all-state recognition. Our students perform a fall musical to packed audiences with dozens of students participating both on and off the stage.
Many of our students participate in one of our numerous clubs. The majority of our clubs include service to our community; but they all focus on student fun. Our most popular is Key Club, with an average of 100 students participating every year. There are opportunities for all students, depending on their interests.
The Escanaba High School was named a Reward School by the Michigan Department of Education in both 2012 and 2014. We were also named a Bronze Medal School by US News and World Report in 2013 and 2015, as well as a Silver Medal School in 2016, putting EHS in the top 100 high schools in Michigan.
It does not matter if you are academic, an athlete, a musician, all three or none of the above. The Escanaba High School has something for you!
